MAHLOG: Upcoming Board Review And Refined Assumptions Signal Balanced Outlook

About Mahindra Logistics

Mahindra Logistics provides integrated logistics solutions across 3PL, express logistics, freight forwarding, last mile delivery and mobility services in India.

What are the underlying business or industry changes driving this perspective?

  • Although the express business has turned gross margin positive for the first time, with yield per kg improving by about Rs 0.90, it still carries a Rs 20 crore quarterly PAT loss. Any slowdown in lane level profitability improvement could therefore limit the uplift to consolidated EBITDA and earnings.
  • Warehouse revenue is Rs 333 crores with roughly 20% year on year growth and white space is being reduced. However, lease costs and right of use assets are already at what management calls peak levels, so slower ramp up of newly added capacity in the East could weigh on net margins if utilization lags.
  • The balance sheet is stronger after the Rs 749 crores rights issue and a reduction in consolidated debt to Rs 73 crores. At the same time, the continued infusion of Rs 50 crores equity into the express subsidiary and ongoing losses there may delay translation of interest savings of Rs 40 crores to Rs 45 crores per annum into higher PAT.
  • E commerce, quick commerce and M&M Auto and Farm volumes are supporting 11% revenue growth to Rs 1,685 crores. However, customer driven pricing pressure in last mile and rate pressure in freight forwarding could cap gross margin improvement if competition intensifies, limiting earnings growth even with better operating discipline.
  • Infrastructure expansion and growing domestic formalization through GST and e way bill growth are helping drive higher network volumes across 3PL, express and cross border. Any delay in achieving targeted 95% reduction in warehousing white space by September 2026 would keep rental and depreciation elevated, constraining improvements in consolidated net margins.

Assumptions

How have these above catalysts been quantified?

  • This narrative explores a more pessimistic perspective on Mahindra Logistics compared to the consensus, based on a Fair Value that aligns with the bearish cohort of analysts.
  • The bearish analysts are assuming Mahindra Logistics's revenue will grow by 13.4% annually over the next 3 years.
  • The bearish analysts assume that profit margins will increase from 0.0% today to 2.2% in 3 years time.
  • The bearish analysts expect earnings to reach ₹2.2 billion (and earnings per share of ₹22.38) by about July 2029, up from ₹22.9 million today. However, there is some disagreement amongst the analysts with the more bullish ones expecting earnings as high as ₹2.5 billion.
  • In order for the above numbers to justify the price target of the more bearish analyst cohort, the company would need to trade at a PE ratio of 33.1x on those 2029 earnings, down from 1685.3x today. This future PE is greater than the current PE for the IN Logistics industry at 15.5x.
  • The bearish analysts expect the number of shares outstanding to grow by 7.0% per year for the next 3 years.
  • To value all of this in today's terms, we will use a discount rate of 13.88%, as per the Simply Wall St company report.

Risks

What could happen that would invalidate this narrative?

  • The company is targeting a roughly 95% cut in warehousing white space by September 2026 while lease costs and right of use assets are already described as being at peak levels. If higher utilization of the expanded East and Nashik capacity is achieved faster than expected, warehouse revenue and overall network revenue could grow ahead of what a flat share price would imply, lifting earnings and net margins.
  • Express logistics has turned gross margin positive at 0.2% with yield per kg improving by about ₹0.90 and tonnage up 7% year on year. If this business moves from a ₹20 crore quarterly PAT loss to EBITDA and PAT profitability on the back of better lane economics, the swing in contribution could meaningfully improve consolidated earnings.
  • The rights issue of ₹749 crores has reduced consolidated debt from ₹601 crores to ₹73 crores and is expected to save ₹40 crores to ₹45 crores in annual interest costs. If management successfully channels these savings and the remaining ₹187 crores of proceeds into higher returning activities, the uplift in net profit could be larger than a flat share price thesis assumes.
  • Domestic logistics demand is being supported by growth in e way bills, GST related formalization, infrastructure expansion and rapid growth in e commerce and quick commerce. If Mahindra Logistics continues to win new mandates with customers such as Cummins, Bosch, Amazon, Flipkart and Mahindra, higher throughput in 3PL, last mile and mobility could translate into stronger revenue growth and better net margins than implied by an unchanged share price.
  • The freight forwarding and mobility subsidiaries are already profitable and reported revenue growth alongside awards and product launches such as Alyte Prive in NCR. If these asset light segments scale further or expand into new airports and cities, their incremental contribution could support higher consolidated earnings and cash flows than assumed in a flat share price view.

Valuation

How have all the factors above been brought together to estimate a fair value?

  • The assumed bearish price target for Mahindra Logistics is ₹410.0, which represents up to two standard deviations below the consensus price target of ₹456.8. This valuation is based on what can be assumed as the expectations of Mahindra Logistics's future earnings growth, profit margins and other risk factors from analysts on the more bearish end of the spectrum.
  • However, there is a degree of disagreement amongst analysts, with the most bullish reporting a price target of ₹504.0, and the most bearish reporting a price target of just ₹410.0.
  • In order for you to agree with the more bearish analyst cohort, you'd need to believe that by 2029, revenues will be ₹102.1 billion, earnings will come to ₹2.2 billion, and it would be trading on a PE ratio of 33.1x, assuming you use a discount rate of 13.9%.
  • Given the current share price of ₹388.95, the analyst price target of ₹410.0 is 5.1% higher. The relatively low difference between the current share price and the analyst consensus price target indicates that they believe on average, the company is fairly priced.
  • We always encourage you to reach your own conclusions though. So sense check these analyst numbers against your own assumptions and expectations based on your understanding of the business and what you believe is probable.
