Investment Thesis

Many investors view eToro primarily as a retail trading platform whose results are heavily influenced by market activity, investor sentiment, and cryptocurrency cycles.

I take a different view.

In my opinion, eToro is gradually evolving into a broader financial ecosystem that combines investing, trading, social engagement, education, and digital assets on a single platform. While short-term revenue and profitability may fluctuate alongside market conditions, the longer-term opportunity may depend more on customer acquisition, product expansion, and user engagement than on any single quarter's trading volume.

Why I Think the Market May Be Underestimating eToro

The investment debate around eToro often focuses on metrics such as trading activity, crypto revenue, and quarterly earnings.

Those factors are important, but they may not fully capture the platform's long-term potential.

As retail investing becomes more accessible globally, platforms that can attract, engage, and retain investors across multiple product categories could be positioned to benefit. eToro's product offering extends beyond stock trading and includes:

  • Stocks and ETFs
  • Cryptocurrency investing
  • CopyTrader and social investing features
  • Managed investment portfolios
  • Educational content
  • Cash and investment management tools

The broader the relationship with a customer, the more opportunities a platform has to generate revenue over time.

The Importance of Global Exposure

One characteristic that makes eToro particularly interesting is its international footprint.

Many well-known fintech platforms generate the majority of their business from a single market. By contrast, eToro has built a presence across numerous international jurisdictions and has established regulatory licenses in multiple regions.

This geographic diversification may provide access to markets where retail investing is still developing and where investor participation rates could increase over time.

While international expansion creates additional regulatory and operational complexity, it may also expand the company's long-term addressable market.

The Numbers Behind the Thesis

A compelling investment narrative should be backed by measurable results.

Historically, eToro has demonstrated strong growth. According to Simply Wall St data, historical revenue growth has averaged approximately 33.1% annually, significantly outpacing the broader capital markets industry growth rate of roughly 0.2%.

Looking ahead, analyst forecasts suggest the company could generate approximately US$261 million in earnings, indicating that eToro is expected to remain profitable while continuing to expand its platform.

For me, these figures help support the view that eToro is more than just a user acquisition story. The company has shown an ability to scale its business while retaining a path toward sustainable profitability.

Crypto Exposure: Risk and Opportunity

Crypto remains one of the most debated aspects of the eToro investment story.

On one hand, cryptocurrency trading can increase revenue volatility because investor activity often rises and falls alongside market sentiment.

On the other hand, digital assets can attract new users to the platform.

Some investors may initially join to gain cryptocurrency exposure and later expand into stocks, ETFs, or other investment products. If that occurs at scale, cryptocurrency may serve as a customer acquisition channel rather than merely a revenue source.

That does not eliminate risk, but it may create opportunities that are not immediately visible through quarterly results alone.

Why the TradeZero Acquisition Matters

The recently announced TradeZero acquisition could become an important strategic development.

The acquisition expands eToro's capabilities in active trading and potentially strengthens its reach within the United States market.

At this stage, the long-term impact remains uncertain. Successful integration, customer retention, and execution will ultimately determine whether the acquisition creates lasting shareholder value.

However, I believe investors should monitor this development closely because it has the potential to expand eToro's addressable customer base, diversify revenue streams, and enhance the overall platform offering.

Valuation: Premium Expectations Require Strong Execution

Valuation is arguably the most debated aspect of the eToro investment case.

Based on Simply Wall St's valuation model, the estimated fair value is approximately US$40.94 per share, implying that the market is already pricing in substantial future growth.

This raises an important question:

Is eToro primarily a cyclical brokerage business, or is it an emerging global fintech ecosystem?

If investors continue valuing the company primarily on trading volumes and crypto activity, today's valuation may appear demanding.

However, if management succeeds in growing funded accounts, increasing customer engagement, integrating TradeZero successfully, and expanding its multi-product ecosystem, investors may increasingly focus on long-term platform economics rather than near-term earnings fluctuations.

I do not view the current valuation as evidence that the stock is automatically overvalued or undervalued. Instead, it reflects elevated expectations that management will continue executing on its growth strategy.

What Could Drive Long-Term Success?

The metrics I believe are most important to track over the coming years include:

  • Revenue growth
  • Profitability
  • Funded account growth
  • Assets held on-platform
  • International expansion
  • Product adoption across multiple asset classes
  • Customer engagement
  • TradeZero integration progress

If these indicators continue improving, they would strengthen the case that eToro is evolving into a diversified financial ecosystem rather than remaining solely dependent on trading activity.

Risks Investors Should Consider

No investment thesis is complete without acknowledging the key risks.

Potential challenges include:

  • Dependence on retail investor activity
  • Cyclical cryptocurrency trading volumes
  • Regulatory changes in key markets
  • Competition from established brokers and emerging fintech platforms
  • Integration risks related to acquisitions
  • Potential valuation compression if growth expectations are not met

Investors should weigh these risks alongside the company's opportunities.

Final Thoughts

My view on eToro is relatively straightforward.

I do not see the company solely as a trading application. Instead, I see a platform attempting to build a broader ecosystem around investing, financial engagement, and wealth creation.

Whether that vision ultimately succeeds remains uncertain, and investors should remain mindful of the risks involved. However, I believe the long-term discussion around eToro should focus less on quarter-to-quarter trading activity and more on the company's ability to deepen customer relationships, expand internationally, and increase the value of its ecosystem.

At today's valuation, investors are effectively betting that management can continue evolving eToro beyond a traditional brokerage platform. If execution remains strong, the company's future may be defined less by trading volumes and more by the strength of its global financial ecosystem.
